Iowa Hill Trail, in the heart of BreckenridgeCO

While wandering around Breckenridge, Colorado, we stumbled upon the most unique history hike close to the town of Breck. Perfect for families and visitors. A hiking trail with historical mining exhibits and interpretive signage.

Taking you back to the the days of gold panning while hiking through the beauty of the Breckenridge area.

Iowa Hill Trail, recognized as one of the best original mining exhibits

Well marked trail and a steady incline through aspens and ponderosa pines lead us to the beginning of several stopping points with really quite staggering original mining exhibits. Eventually taking you to the Iowa Hill Hydraulic Placer Mine area.

Starting at 9,600 ft in elevation the trail zigzags its way close to 10,000 ft. elevation. Along the way find yourself engrossed in how all this came together and how did they get all this up this mountain!

Fascinating and so well done. Quite the history hike.

This unusual round “something” without signage appeared on our hike and pondering that for awhile we came to no conclusion of what it is…

Find out what the large round twig “thing” is by doing a guided hike with Breckenridge Heritage Alliance. They are well known for guided hikes throughout Breckenridge and with their extensive knowledge of the history of the area you may want to join them on a guided hike of Iowa Hill Trail.

Iowa Hill Trail, A taste of mining history in the heart of Breckenridge, CO

As you keep going around the loop a restored original boarding house brings lots of imaging about how it really was to be a miner in Breckenridge during the 1800’s. Always love to see old buildings, cabins and remnants of the past.

An adventure recommended if you are wanting a moderate, short, yet interesting hike with fresh mountain air. Great for kids, getting the dog out, entertaining the relatives and surrounding yourself with nature.

Another family friendly hike we love in Frisco, CO, not far from Breckenridge, Rainbow Lake Trail, click here, for a peek.

To get to the Iowa Hill Trail Loop: Head north from the town of Breckenridge on Hwy. 9, turn left at Valley Brook Rd. Take a right on Airport Rd for about a ¼ mile. The trailhead is on the left with a designated sign and parking area.
