Having had so much snow and long winter this year, we were anxious to do a hike with the warmth of sunshine. It’s late spring and we found it!
Django & Fistful of Dollars Trails Loop, a little paradise and a fantastic hike.
Having hiked and lived in Colorado all my life I’ve become a weather nut and can pretty much tell by the forecast where to go (or not to go) on any given day in the state. Today we were looking for sun and headed towards Chaffee County.
Hiking through beautiful rock outcroppings, a pinon forest, cacti and wildflowers about to bloom made for intense summer longings. Under blazing sunshine was an added treat! Well, not blazing hot, it was still a bit cool out but after this winter it felt blazing.
Views of the Collegiate Peaks on every bend on the Django Trail.
We found ourselves stopping often just to take it in.
Really not a hard hike, slightly moderate, got our heart pumping in a few uphill areas but really a trail for anyone who desires to start hiking. A great beginner hike.
Need a couple Day Hikes to get your heart pumping? Two of our favorites, these trails are why we hike.
Browns Lake Trail, with a sparkling cascading waterfall and beautiful alpine lake.
Ptarmigan Lake Trail, absolutely one of our favorites!
We started on Django Trail and came upon Fistful of Dollars Trail to make a nice loop hike.
On the left was a picnic area of the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area and we found an overlook with the most incredible views of the snow-covered Collegiate Peaks. (and a bathroom!).
Collegiate Peaks Overlook is worth the detour before heading out on Fistful of Dollars trail.
Most of Django trail went downhill and most of Fistful of Dollars trail is a slightly uphill climb with stunning terrain in every direction.
Not a lot of hikers about and such a scenic peaceful setting.
New to hiking or want a quick (kinda) easy hike, Django Trail is perfect along with Fistful of Dollars Trail
Easy access off of Hwy 285 and close to the picturesque town of Buena Vista, it can be an easy all-day adventure.
Located: Heading south on Hwy 285, turn right on Co Rd. 304, before reaching the turn to Buena Vista (if you passed the KOA campground you’ve gone too far). We headed up the dusty road to the free parking area at Co Rd 304 and 303. You’ll find the Django trailhead here in the same area as the Midland Trail Singletrack.
