Nederland, CO, sits at the foot of the Indian Peaks Wilderness, which has some of Colorado’s best day hikes. In winter, you can hike to Lost Lake, where access is available from Hessie Trailhead.

Hessie Trailhead is a popular trail that is excellent for winter hiking after many have packed the snow before you, and in most cases, only > microspikes are necessary.

The trail begins flat and easy, but we did find ourselves on slight uphills that required more energy! The hike becomes a short, strenuous last push, about a  1/2 mile before reaching Lost Lake.

Three popular brands of day hiking backpacks to consider: > Osprey (my personal favorite), > Deuter, and > Gregory backpacks.

It’s quiet, with very few other hikers. The only sounds are skiers at Eldora Ski Resort whooping with joy and descending the mountain nearby.

The sun continues to tease us but never really appears as clouds hover over us, sprinkling snow flurries on everything.

Upon reaching Lost Lake, the weather abruptly turns; it’s snowing heavily, and we are rapidly heading back down.

NOTE: The weather forecast did not call for snow, just sunny skies all day. I mention this because being prepared for anything in Colorado’s mountains is essential. This was entirely unexpected and a big surprise for us!

It was a beautiful hike when the flakes started flying. However, we are covered in white and find it harder to see where the trail is.

It was a memorable day hiking through a beautiful snowfall and a day to remind us not to forget the extras to stay safe!
