Spruce Mountain Trail is a gem hidden in the Foothills of Colorado. Views, rock outcroppings, and pine forests make this hike a treat so close to major cities.

We started off in a rolling green meadow before turning and heading up to Spruce Mountain Top Loop. This is where a special kind of magic happened. Lush greenery and wildflowers unexpected line the trail under a canopy of scrub oak and pines.
SHADY & COOLER
Finding ourselves entering a forest of pines which was pleasantly shaded as we trekked our way up a slight incline of switchbacks to reach the top of Spruce Mtn.

The views were breathtaking as we popped out of the forest and started hiking along rock-cropped edges of the flattop.
WINDY POINT
After a short hike, we came to a junction and started the Mountain Top Loop that eventually takes us to Windy Point, a spectacular rock outcropping area. A favorite spot to take in the abundant views stretching as far as Pikes Peak.
Spruce Mountain is actually a Butte and the majority of the loop takes you around the outer edges of the top. One of my favorite front range trails for its shade and cooler temperatures in summer.

HEADING BACK
The gradual incline to reach the loop at the top is minimal and easily achieved. The loop across the top is mostly level, wide, and well maintained. Don’t be worried about the moderate rating. This is a great choice if wanting something close to Denver or Colorado Springs.
Bring a paddleboard and head to Palmer Lake after your hike. It’s just minutes away!
